Burundi has nominated the highest representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the country. Three other experts involved in the fight against the coronavirus must also leave. This is stated in a letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The letter to the African headquarters of the WHO states that the four officials are persona non grata and must leave before Friday. “It is the entire WHO team responsible for supporting Burundi in tackling Covid-19,” said an anonymous official in the country.
The source says the Secretary of Health has “completely shut out the international health organization.” The minister would blame WHO for “unacceptable interference” in the way the fight against virus outbreaks is being conducted.
No reason given
The letter, which was seen by the AFP news agency, does not state any reason for the expulsion of the experts. Insiders say that Burundi also made a move to send the four away a month ago, but did not get through.
In the country of approximately 11 million inhabitants, 27 corona infections have so far been detected. Authorities may have no idea of the actual magnitude of the outbreak due to limited testing.
